Bingo: It's a tough decision for some students at Maple Grove Elementary on which prize to pick when they win.
After eyeing it several times, she selected a Bratz book that came with a piece of jewelry. Other students knew exactly what they wanted during Maple Grove's Book Fair Bingo on Friday at the school. Madison Tetmeyer, 7, of West Des Moines selected "No Dogs Allowed" after she won the bingo game.
"I wanted this book in the library," she said. "But I was on the waiting list."
Maple Grove's PTO sponsored the evening to provide families free entertainment and the opportunity to refresh their libraries. Attendees were asked to bring in used books for bingo prizes. Six-year-old Daphne Bailey of West Des Moines couldn't wait to pick out a book.
"She's focused on bingo," said her mom, Justine. "She's a reader."
Other kids were learning for the first time, like Jensen Kaldenberg, 4, of Winterset. "Where is it? Do I have it, Mom?" he asked after the bingo numbers were called. Sporting his lucky Eagles football jersey, the first-time bingo player said his favorite part was marking the bingo numbers.
However, all students in attendance received a bookmark designed by one of their classmates. About 70 Maple Grove students submitted designs and one from each grade was chosen. Avery Showalter's "Fall in to Reading" was picked to represent the second grade.
"I got a leaf from outside and traced it," the 7-year-old from Waukee said.
She
and fifth-grade winner Amber Washington, 10, of Clive, said they knew
their designs won when they saw them hanging up on a poster in the
hallway. Amber said it took her a little over 30 minutes to create her colorful masterpiece, although she didn't personally need it.
"I have other bookmarks," she said.
