Bingo: Bingo Hall Gambling In UK Gets Much Needed Legal Victory

|
As previously reported here on CGW, bingo halls in the UK have been waiting nervously for a ruling from government on a law that was put in place last September. The changes made last September were that bingo halls had to drop the amount of slots they could have from eight to four.

Consequently, the bingo industry has been lagging since the law went into effect, and this week they were hoping for the best from Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe. Today, they received the good news.

Sutcliffe announced that he will be reversing the decision from last September. "We believe today's announcement will go some way to addressing the adverse4 position bingo operates under. Our hope is that this can be implemented as soon as practically possible, as the future of many bingo clubs depends on it," said Chief Executive of the Bingo Association, Paul Talboys.

The UK has seen an industry that was for a long time profiting, begin to dissolve in recent years. Almost 100 clubs have closed down in the past four years thanks to the restrictions that have been placed on them.

This reversal is the first step in bringing back an industry that was vital to the community. "Bingo clubs play a crucial role in many communities and we want to see that continue. I hope to implement these plans by the end of the year," said Sutcliffe.

He is planning to move up a year a plan to review low stake gambling machines.
